FOR THE LOVE OF AN OPEN SHELF
Updated: Mar 1
There is something about open kitchen shelving that truly excites me (i really need to get out more!). I love the way you can display your crockery and glassware instead of hiding them away and it gives the kitchen a much brighter and more open feel. It is also a cheap and easy option when wanting to revamp any kitchen
I had been thinking about replacing my wall cupboards for some shelving for quite a while now, so last week, i did just that.
After taking down my old cupboards, I filled in the screw holes with some wood filler and then gave them a light sanding down. I used some caulk to fill any cracks before giving all the walls a fresh coat of paint with some Dulux Kitchen emulsion.
I had a pretty good idea of what type of open shelves i wanted, as I have posted plenty of gorgeous kitchens on my Instagram account and have spent many an hour scrolling through Pinterest.
There were a couple that i had in mind, the first being a recycled scaffolding plank cut down to size teamed with some wrought iron brackets or plain white painted shelving with matching brackets. Guess which one i went for?
Yep! "the white shelf" I had a look online and found that Ikea stocked a great range of shelves, including white ones so I took a drive to my nearest branch to pick up the shelving and matching brackets. These were a no-brainer, they were so easy to assemble and they did not require any sawing, as i am absolutely useless with one. After, a little careful planning of where to place them and how high, they were up in no time.
It has freed up so much wall space for me to add a few more finishing touches too.
By throwing away the old cupboards, gave me the perfect excuse to have a really good clear out which in turn, has been extremely therapeutic. Although there will be a lot more dusting going on in the kitchen, i only wish i had done this revamp sooner.
